Keep your Dolphin pool cleaner operating at peak performance with this essential maintenance step.

Robotic pool cleaners make pool ownership easier by taking care of one of the most time-consuming tasks: cleaning. However, just like any appliance, they need regular maintenance to stay in top condition, and one of the most important maintenance tasks is to regularly check the brush and replace it if it is looking worn.

In this guide, we’ll explain why replacing your robotic pool cleaner brush matters, when to do it, and provide step-by-step instructions on how to replace it with handy video tutorials.

Why Replacing the Brush Matters

The brush is a key component of your robotic pool cleaner. It scrubs algae, loosens debris, and gives your cleaner the traction it needs to climb walls and navigate the pool floor. Over time, brushes wear down due to:

  • Constant contact with pool surfaces (tiles, concrete, fibreglass, etc.)

  • Exposure to chemicals and UV light

  • The rigours of frequent use, especially in peak swimming seasons

A worn-out brush can lead to:

  • Reduced scrubbing power

  • Less effective dirt and debris pickup

  • Loss of grip, causing the cleaner to slip or stop climbing

  • Increased wear on other internal components due to overcompensation

When Should You Replace the Brushes?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, as it depends on:

  • How often your cleaner is used

  • The pool surface

  • The type of brush material (foam typically wears out quicker than PVC)

As a general rule of thumb:

Replace every 12–18 months, or sooner if you notice:

  • The cleaner is struggling to climb walls or missing debris

  • Brushes that are frayed, flattened, or falling apart

  • Reduced suction or visible decrease in cleaning performance

Regular visual inspections will help you stay ahead of major wear and tear.

What Type of Brush Does Your Cleaner Use?

Different pool surfaces require different brushes. If you want to know more about which type of brush to use based on the pool surface, you can check out this Dolphin Tips video:

Here are the common types used on Maytronics Dolphin models:

1. PVC Brushes

  • A standard brush that is suitable for most pool types[NR5]

  • Made from durable plastic

  • Easy to install and long-lasting

2. Wonder Brushes

  • Made from soft foam-like material

  • Ideal for smooth, slippery pool surfaces

  • Offers excellent grip and wall-climbing performance

  • Good for tiled, smooth concrete, and algae-prone pools

3. Combined Brushes

  • A mix of PVC and foam

  • Designed to suit semi-slippery pools or coarse pool surfaces

  • Best suited to quartz, granite, pebblecrete and rough render pools.

Step-by-Step: How to Replace Your Robotic Pool Cleaner’s Brush

Changing the brush is simpler than you might expect. Here's a detailed breakdown:

Step 1: Turn Off and Disconnect the Cleaner

  • Use the power supply to turn the cleaner off.

  • Disconnect the power cable from the unit.

  • Remove the cleaner from the pool and allow it to drain completely.

  • Place the cleaner on a flat, clean surface with the underside facing up.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Brush

  • Look at the roller(s) on the underside of your robot – this is where the brush is installed.

  • Grip the brush firmly at one end.

  • Pull it away from the roller. It may take a bit of force if it’s been on there for a while.

  • Slide it off completely and dispose of it responsibly.

Step 3: Install the New Brush

  • Take the new brush and line it up with roller grooves or notches.

  • Gently push and slide the brush into place, starting at one end and working across.

  • Ensure the brush is centered and secured on the roller with no loose ends or gaps.

Step 4: Inspect and Test

  • Spin the rollers by hand to ensure the brush moves freely and isn’t misaligned.

  • Return the cleaner to the pool.

  • Run a short cleaning cycle to test its performance.

You should immediately notice better traction and scrubbing compared to the worn brush.
