How to Maintain a Magnesium Pool with Maytronics Mineral Swim System

22 October, 2026

A well-maintained magnesium pool delivers clear, soft-feeling water with less day-to-day effort. But like any swimming pool, it still needs consistent water testing, filtration, cleaning and sanitisation to stay healthy and ready to enjoy.

Mineral Swim™ by Maytronics combines 100% Dead Sea minerals, including magnesium-rich minerals, with ozone-to-oxygen purification and chlorination.

This guide explains how to care for your pool, protect water quality and get the best from Maytronics minerals.

How to Maintain a Magnesium Pool: 6 Essential Steps

Follow these six practical steps as part of your regular magnesium swimming pool maintenance routine.

1. Test Your Pool Water

Regular water testing keeps a magnesium pool balanced, comfortable and properly sanitised. Use a reliable test kit or take a sample to your local Elite Dealer.

For a Mineral Swim™ system, recommended water levels include:

  • Free chlorine: 1 to 3 ppm

  • pH for fibreglass pools: 7.0 to 7.2

  • pH for concrete pools: 7.2 to 7.6

  • Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

  • TDS: 3,500 to 4,500 ppm

Testing is particularly important after heavy pool use, rainfall or adding significant amounts of fresh water.

2. Maintain Your Mineral Levels

Mineral Swim™ uses 100% Dead Sea minerals. Check the mineral concentration regularly and top up with the recommended Maytronics Mineral Swim minerals when water is diluted or removed through splash-out, backwashing, overflow or water replacement.

The required amount depends on pool volume and current mineral concentration. Follow the instructions for your Mineral Swim™ system or ask a pool professional to confirm the correct dosage.

3. Keep Your Filter Clean

Effective filtration is essential for clear magnesium pool water. Clean or backwash the filter as required, and empty pool skimmer and pump baskets before debris restricts water flow.

Mineral Swim™ recommends regular filtration to help circulate the minerals and maintain water quality. During periods of higher pool use, your filtration system may need to run for longer.

4. Clean Your Magnesium Swimming Pool Regularly

A mineral pool can still collect leaves, dirt, dust and other debris. Regularly:

  • Skim the surface

  • Brush the walls, steps and waterline

  • Vacuum the pool floor

  • Remove debris from baskets

  • Clean the filter when required

A Dolphin robotic pool cleaner by Maytronics can automate floor, wall and waterline cleaning, helping reduce manual work while supporting a consistent pool-care routine.

5. Maintain the Water Level

Keep the water around the middle of the pool skimmer opening to support effective circulation and filtration.

If you add a significant amount of fresh water, check your pool chemistry afterwards, as water replacement can affect mineral concentration and other water parameters.

6. Use a Pool Cover Covering your pool when it is not being used can help reduce evaporation and prevent leaves, dirt and other debris from entering the water.

Does a Magnesium Pool Need Chlorine?

Yes. A magnesium swimming pool still needs an approved sanitiser. In a Mineral Swim™ pool, chlorine works alongside ozone purification and minerals to maintain hygienic water.

The ozone-to-oxygen purification process neutralises organic contaminants and can reduce chlorine demand, while the chlorinator continues to provide a sanitising residual in the pool.

How Maytronics Minerals Support Your Magnesium Pool

Mineral Swim™ uses 100% Dead Sea minerals rich in magnesium. These Maytronics minerals contribute to the soft, silky water feel associated with a magnesium pool and can support clarity through natural flocculation, which helps the filter capture fine particles.

Together, Dead Sea minerals, ozone purification, chlorination, circulation and filtration form a complete approach to maintaining clean, clear pool water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you test a magnesium pool?

Test your magnesium pool at least weekly during the swimming season, and more often after heavy use, rain, extreme heat or significant water replacement. Follow your system instructions and local professional advice.

Does a magnesium swimming pool need chlorine?

Yes. Mineral Swim™ uses chlorine alongside ozone purification and 100% Dead Sea minerals to maintain sanitation while reducing chlorine demand.

Can you use a robotic pool cleaner in a mineral pool?

Yes. A compatible robotic pool cleaner can remove dirt and debris from the floor, walls and waterline. Always follow the cleaner manufacturer’s operating and water-chemistry guidance.

How do you keep a magnesium pool clear?

Maintain balanced water, correct mineral levels, effective circulation and filtration, and a regular cleaning schedule. Promptly remove debris and retest after weather events or major water changes.

Is a magnesium pool low maintenance?

A magnesium pool can simplify some aspects of water care, especially when paired with ozone purification and automated cleaning. However, testing, filtration, sanitisation and routine cleaning are still essential.
